Traders from around the world will be descending on Stoke-on-Trent when a continental market returns to the city.

From Wednesday, April 13 to Saturday, April 16, dozens of traders will be setting up stalls in the city centre in Tontine Square and Upper Market Square. Visitors to the market will be able to try a variety of foods or pick up a gift from lots of different countries. Previous traders have represented countries including India, Jamaica, Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Germany, Belgium and the home nations.

The continental traders will take their place alongside Hanley’s regular market traders to ensure there is something on offer for everyone. And young traders or talented musicians and entertainers aged between 12 and 25 are being offered pitches free of charge to further add to the atmosphere of the market.

Councillor Jack Brereton, cabinet member with responsibility for markets, said:We’re delighted to be welcoming the continental market back to the city centre. Attractions like this encourage more people to shop, eat or visit some of the fantastic places our city has to offer.

On the Friday and Saturday we will be putting up extra stalls so that our young traders and performers aged 12 to 25 have a chance to showcase their creative products and talents for free. This is a great opportunity for them to take the next step and test trade on a market stall, as well as gain vital experience from long-standing traders.

The market is organised by Market Place Europe and will be open from 9am to 5.30pm Wednesday to Saturday. A second continental market is also scheduled to be held in the city centre later in the year between October 19 and 22.

Chris Hulley, Market Place Europe operations manager, said:We are really looking forward to returning to Stoke-on-Trent with the continental market in April where the traders always get such a warm welcome.”

With the local market making such a good link with the continental market, customers can go from the local delicacies such as oatcakes and pottery to paella and French crepes in the blink of an eye. There should be something on offer for everyone.”

Any young traders wishing to snap up a free stall can express their interest by emailing marketevents@stoke.gov.uk or by calling the markets team on 01782 232716.
