A month of June celebrations gets under way at Scarborough Market Hall this weekend.
As the town celebrates the Queen’s 90th birthday, traders are doing their bit to join in the party.
For example, Horsley’s and Nockels butchers are preparing special value barbecue packs for people to enjoy on Saturday.
Then later in the month the market will celebrate a host of other events too, including Father’s Day, Armed Forces Day and Wimbledon.
Whilst work continues on its £2.7m transformation, the market will be decked out in celebration bunting to launch some new promotions.
Watch out for a special June leaflet, detailing all the promotions, which is currently being distributed.
In the run-up to Father’s Day on Sunday 19th June, the market stallholders will be coming up with gift ideas and sharing them on social media. Celebrations Party Supplies on the lower ground floor have a great stock of Father’s Day fun gift ideas.
Going to Armed Forces Day on Saturday 25th June? Then Deli Delicious is offering the perfect picnic to take with you, including a freshly-made sandwich, crisps and a drink, all for under a fiver.
And if Wimbledon is more your thing, then the leaflet includes 30p off a punnet of strawberries from either Metcalfe’s or All Season’s fruit and vegetable stalls on the ground floor.
Contractors have begun a complete revamp of the St Helen’s Square market as it gets a new mezzanine upper floor, creating space for new shops, offices and a café, as well as a complete facelift throughout. The market remains open with current stalls available throughout the work, which is expected to be completed by December.
Councillor Bill Chatt, Scarborough Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health and Housing, said: “There’s going to be a real party atmosphere down at the market this summer, as the stalls join in with a variety of celebrations.
“Whilst the work is being carried out to create a great new market there’s plenty to see, buy and enjoy at the existing market, upstairs and downstairs. “
On the ground floor hoardings have been put around an L-shaped section of the market, down the left hand side and bottom of the market, as you enter from St Helen’s Square. This is enabling work to start on the transformation, including the construction of the mezzanine floor. Market traders now occupy the remaining open space and are trading as normal. The existing entrances from St Helen’s Square are unaffected. Some construction work is also happening on the lower ground floor but the unique variety of shops down there are operating as normal.
Leeds-based Esh Construction Ltd is carrying out the work and is expected to include local workers on the contract.
