Preparations are in full swing for a street party to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday in Mansfield Market Place which is set to bring hundreds of visitors to the town centre on Sunday 12 June.

It is being hosted by Mansfield District Council with support from Mansfield BID and will have something for all ages, including pony rides, giant garden games and children’s party entertainment plus free giveaways, including flags to wave and Victoria sponge tasters (whilst stocks last).

The Market Place will be decorated in red white and blue with thanks to the local community which has rallied together over the past few months to knit and crochet decorative pieces as part of a Royal Knit campaign.

The aim was to bring people in the district together to help dress the town centre using the unusual street art phenomenon known as ‘yarn bombing’ in preparation for the street party, covering tree trunks, lamp posts and railings in wool. Volunteers have jumped at the chance to get involved and are keen to show off their work, which will be on display from 6 to 19 June.

There will also be a ‘design a bag’ competition in collaboration with Mansfield BID. Simply draw a design on one of the bag shaped templates in the craft area. Your design can be anything aimed at wishing the Queen a happy 90th birthday. The winning design will be printed onto shopping bags and given out at the BID’s evening market in August. Visit www.mansfieldtowncentre.co.uk for more details.
