Scarborough Market must reclaim its place as the beating heart of the town by providing a warm, welcoming atmosphere and something new and exciting.

That’s what consultation on the future of the market has suggested, as the building is made ready for a £2.7m transformation.

Partners behind the redevelopment sought the views of shoppers, tourists and businesses.

Findings suggest people have an appetite for a market offering produce that is distinct and unique to Scarborough and providing good quality and value for money. It should offer a warm, welcoming atmosphere, a more modern shopping experience, feel busy with an exciting hustle and bustle, and throw up some surprises.

Councillor Bill Chatt, Scarborough Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health and Housing, said:The consultation is both reinforcing our own views about the future of the market and also giving us some food for thought for the planned redevelopment.

The research seems to suggest that if we can restore its energy and a warm welcoming atmosphere, whilst providing good quality, value for money products, people will go and enjoy their new market.

As a key part of the transformational plans to develop a 21st Century Market Place, we were really pleased to receive positive feedback on the planned online, virtual market, with respondents looking forward to its convenience. Also for the online market intelligence system, a resource expected to be invaluable to local businesses.
