A GIANT and an enormous, majestic eagle re-launched Stockton Town Centre in spectacular fashion on Saturday 21st March. The eagle swooped across the town as part of a breath taking piece of street theatre to the reveal the stunning new water feature in its garden like setting. Leader of Stockton Council, Councillor Bob Cook and Mayor of Stockton, Councillor Barbara Inman officially re-opened the new look Town Centre following its two and half year multimillion pound regeneration.

Stockton Market 3At 1.00pm visitors saw first-hand the scale of events the High Street can now host thanks to the multi-million pound transformation. An intriguing and spectacular performance by Spanish Theatre Company Carros de Foc wrote a new story for Stockton Town Centre, bringing a giant to the High Street and revealing the magic of the new space.

The giant’s voice was recorded by North-East born actor, Bill Fellows, who is most recently known for his role in Wolfblood and Broadchurch.

On the day, visitors to Stockton Town Centre enjoyed a host of family-fun activities ranging from puppet-making and face-painting to storytelling, crazy golf, soccer skills, street theatre and live music.

Stockton Market 1There was also FREE parking in Wellington Square, the Castlegate Centre and in all other Stockton owned car parks to encourage people to come to the event. As part of the Town Centre’s new look the iconic 700- year old traditional market has now been relocated to its new home in the heart of the town. The central location has helped create a fantastic atmosphere and the bustling stalls at this traditional market make it one not to be missed. It is open every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The launch day was very positive for the market and saw a great engagement and interaction between traders and customers. The council had also decided to give the traders FREE rent on the day to mark the celebration.

Stockton market recently won the Best Love Your Local Market Event at the Nabma Conference in Birmingham and this year they are planning on doing yet another great event.
